Derzeit wird der neue fakultätsübergreifende Masterstudienschwerpunkt RAUMSTRATEGIEN / SPATIAL STRATEGIES erprobt, der den MA Architektur mit dem MA Integrated Design Research an der KISD verbindet.
RAUMSTRATEGIEN beschäftigt sich nicht nur mit materiellen Objekten, sondern auch mit kulturellen und sozialen Prozessen und Praktiken der Nutzung, Aneignung und Transformation der gestalteten Umwelt. Besonderes Augenmerk liegt auf der Erforschung und Entwicklung der Stadt als Lebensraum – mit ihren Artefakten, ihren sozialen Milieus, ihren unterschiedlichen Kulturen, ihren Sinneseindrücken und Geschichten. Dabei rücken Handlungsräume unterschiedlicher Größe in den Fokus, mit deren Bedingungen wir uns im Maßstab 1:1 auseinandersetzen. Durch aktives Gestalten lernen wir sie kennen und erfinden neue Wege, sie für Aneignungsprozesse zu öffnen. Wir initiieren Prozesse, die den beteiligten Akteur:innen dabei helfen, mit ihnen umzugehen sowie ihre Möglichkeiten zu erkennen, zu begreifen und zu nutzen.
Der kooperative Masterstudienschwerpunkt RAUMSTRATEGIEN bezieht sich auf den spatial turn. Damit wird eine seit den 1980er-Jahren diskutierte Wende in den Kulturwissenschaften bezeichnet, die den Raum (spatial = räumlich) als kulturelle Größe wahrnimmt und als Grundlage kultureller Praktiken und Ordnungen zu bestimmen sucht.
RAUMSTRATEGIEN untersucht die räumlichen Neuordnungen, die durch die Umbrüche in der globalen politischen Geografie, durch die Verbreitung digitaler Kommunikationstechnologien und durch die globale Zirkulation von Menschen und Gütern hervorgerufen werden. Die Grundthese ist, dass durch diese gesellschaftlichen Wandlungsprozesse die Beziehungen der Menschen zu ihren Räumen neu ausgehandelt, verändert und neu geordnet werden. Durch die Analyse solcher Transformationsprozesse will der Studienschwerpunkt einen Beitrag zum besseren Verständnis und zur Erklärung aktueller gesellschaftlicher Konflikte und Unsicherheiten leisten und – durch Architektur und Design – alternative Gestaltungen öffentlicher Räume aufzeigen. Dabei verbinden sich Körper, Dinge, Räume und Technologien in bisher unbekannter Weise und eröffnen neue Potenziale des Urbanen. Diese Möglichkeiten auszuloten und die Stadt als urbanes Gemeingut neu zu denken und zu gestalten, ist ein wesentlicher Bestandteil des Studiums.
RAUMSTRATEGIEN bezeichnet ein Feld, in dem für Designer:innen, Architekt:innen und Kulturwissenschaftler:innen neue Aufgaben entstehen und in dem zugleich auch Künstler:innen, Stadt- und Landschaftsplaner:innen und andere Professionen gestaltend tätig sind. Den Rahmen bildet dabei eine Pluralität von theoretischen und methodischen Ansätzen der Raumforschung aus Design und Architektur, Kultur- und Medientheorie, Soziologie, Stadtforschung und Geografie. Der Studienschwerpunkt verbindet systematisch künstlerisch-gestalterische mit wissenschaftlichen Methoden.
Der MA-Studienschwerpunkt ist im Themencluster »Urban Intensities & Ressources« des MA-Studiengangs Integrated Design Research angesiedelt. Projekte und Seminare können in Kooperation mit Studierenden und Lehrenden der Architektur durchgeführt werden. Bitte beachten Sie die speziellen Kooperationsangebote im Semesterprogramm. In transdisziplinären Projekten haben die Studierenden die Möglichkeit, ihre Forschungen und Entwürfe gemeinsam mit außeruniversitären Forschungseinrichtungen sowie kulturellen, zivilgesellschaftlichen und städtischen Partner:innen zu erarbeiten und wirksam werden zu lassen. Darüber hinaus wird die Möglichkeit einer transkulturellen Bearbeitung mit internationalen Partnerhochschulen eröffnet.
Der Studienschwerpunkt ist in ein attraktives wissenschaftliches Umfeld eingebettet, zu dem die TH-Forschungsstelle »Echtzeitstadt« und das Promotionskolleg NRW mit seinem Schwerpunkt »Bau und Kultur« gehören. Die Masterabsolvent:innen aus Design und Architektur haben die Möglichkeit, ein Dissertationsprojekt im Schwerpunktbereich »Raum und Kultur« des Promotionskollegs NRW anzuschließen.

The new cross-faculty Master’s focus on SPATIAL STRATEGIES, which combines the MA Architecture with the MA Integrated Design Research KISD, is currently being tested.
The cooperative Master’s study focus SPATIAL STRATEGIES refers to the spatial turn – a turn in cultural studies, discussed since the 1980s, which perceives space as a cultural quantity and seeks to define it as the basis of cultural practices and orders.
SPATIAL STRATEGIES is concerned not only with material objects, but also with cultural and social processes and practices of use, appropriation, and transformation of the designed environment. Special attention is paid to the exploration and development of the city as a living space – with its artifacts, its social milieus, diverse cultures, sensory impressions and histories. We will focus on spaces of different sizes and their conditions on a 1:1 scale. Through active design we get to know them and invent new ways to open them up for appropriation processes. We initiate processes that help the actors involved to deal with them and to recognize, understand and use their possibilities.

SPATIAL STRATEGIES examines the spatial rearrangements brought about by upheavals in global political geography, the proliferation of digital communication technologies, and the global circulation of people and goods. The basic thesis is that through these processes of social transformation, people’s relationships to their spaces are being renegotiated, changed, and rearranged. By analyzing such processes of transformation, the program aims to contribute to a better understanding and explanation of current social conflicts and insecurities, and – through architecture and design – to point to alternative designs for public spaces. In the process, bodies, things, spaces and technologies connect in previously unknown ways and open up new potentials for the urban. Exploring these possibilities and rethinking and redesigning the city as an urban commons is an essential component of the program.
SPATIAL STRATEGIES describes a field in which new tasks arise for designers, architects, and cultural scientists, and in which artists, urban and landscape planners, and other professions are also active in design. The framework is formed by a plurality of theoretical and methodological approaches to spatial research from design and architecture, cultural and media theory, sociology, urban studies and geography. The program systematically combines artistic design with scientific methods.
In transdisciplinary projects, students have the opportunity to develop and implement their research and designs together with non-university research institutions as well as cultural, civic and urban partners. In addition, there is the possibility of transcultural work with international partner universities.
SPATIAL STRATEGIES is embedded in an attractive scientific environment, which includes the TH research center »Real-Time City« and the doctoral program NRW with its focus on »Bau und Kultur« (Building and Culture). Master’s graduates in design and architecture have the opportunity to complete a dissertation project in the »Space and Culture« focus area of the NRW Doctoral Academy.
The range of possible perspectives encompasses:

– Data-driven modes of interaction and new interfaces between bodies, things and spaces

– Structures of socio-spatial inequality, exclusion and discipline and their overcoming

– Analog/digital techniques for participatory appropriation and design of urban spaces and processes

– Urban practices of sharing and sustainable consumption
– Social utopias for life in the post-fossil city
– Potentials and real experiments of informal urban production
– Participatory approaches to the appropriation of space
– The emergence of new publics and public spaces
