Prof. Dr. Nadine Zinser-Junghanns on Teaching

Design | TH Köln, Conceptual Architecture + Design focuses on innovative design processes for real, virtual, and hybrid spaces, from the initial abstract thought to a possible concrete realization. The goal is to create meaningful atmospheres that provide the spatial framework for human perception and interaction with the environment. Inspiration and new technologies are drawn from other disciplines, where we explore new approaches at the intersection of space and object design.

Students research and develop various strategies and methods for the conceptual derivation of real, virtual, and hybrid space. Considering the increasing fusion of analog and digital realms, they are enabled to explore, understand, and co-create the complex interrelationship of human, space, and time. Through process-oriented, adaptive, interconnected, and participatory approaches, students learn to translate their abstract ideas into concrete applications and activate space. Methodological knowledge is experimentally conveyed and acquired through both practice-based and theory-based teaching formats – Learning by Doing and Design by Research. Students are empowered to implement, communicate, and discuss their concepts using analog, digital, and increasingly hybrid working methods and tools.

Within the affiliated hybrid space+ lab, we specifically research and experiment with the following topics:
We explore real, virtual, and hybrid spaces.
We design possible and impossible places.
We sense spaces and atmospheres.
We transfer the virtual into reality and back.
We activate space, object, and human.

Short Bio
Prof. Dr. Nadine Zinser-Junghanns is a Professor of ´Conceptual Architecture and Design´ at TH Köln and head of the ´space+ lab´, where she explores hybrid spatial research at the intersection of XR, AI, and emerging design methodologies. Her work focuses on the dynamic interplay between real, virtual, and hybrid spaces, emphasizing process-driven, adaptive, and participatory design approaches.

She is actively involved in the development of the new international ´Master of Spatial Strategies´, launching in collaboration with KISD, Köln International School of Design, in the winter semester of 2025. Her teaching and research integrate analog, digital, and mixed methodologies, enabling students to develop innovative strategies for spatial perception and interaction.

Her research includes Sino-German collaborations with Tongji University, a research semester in Shanghai in cooperation with BMW Design Works Shanghai, and projects such as ´mixed reality space´ with REDiEE TH Köln and ´Hybrid Spatial Research´. She has also curated hackathons on digital media in public space and artistic research in cooperation with Drama Köln.

Her latest exhibitions include ´AI-conic six´ at Raum 13 Köln in collaboration with Ola Handford from Mind Makers (2025), the ´space+ show l + II´ (2024 + 25) and ´Geheimnisse eines Kunstsalons´ at MAKK Köln.

Her work challenges the boundaries between material and immaterial design, translating abstract ideas into new spatial realities that activate humans, objects, and spaces.
